COVID-19: 7000 Mobile Grocery Units launched by Chennai Corporation

The Chennai Corporation is rolling out 7000 mobile grocery units from today across the city of Chennai to meet the grocery needs of the residents of the city. The announcement was made by the city commissioner G Prakash after he met with a representative of the trader’s association at the Rippon building on Wednesday. A total of 5000 tricycles and 2000 auto rickshaws and vans will be used for this purpose.

Mr. A M Vikramraja president of Federation of Tamil Nadu Trader’s Association has stated that they have collaborated with scrap dealers to convert the tricycles into vegetable carts for the purpose, as many of the scrap dealers have been out of business due to the lockdown and this will help them. He also stated that each pack would contain an assortment of household items that include rice, dal, oil, soaps, and biscuit packets, which will be available as 500, 850, and 1000 packs. All vehicles will have the price list so that people are able to check. Special ID will be provided to the vendors and the Chennai corporation logo for the vehicle by the Civil body.

Safety gloves and the mask will be provided to the vendors, and they will have to wear it all given times. Several other departments, too, have come up with schemes to ensure that people stay indoor without worrying about their daily needs.

The CMDA, for instance, has introduced a scheme wherein people can dial, order online, or log on to the food delivery app where they can directly access the vegetables and food directly from Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC) and that the material would be delivered at the doorstep.

Order can be placed for at least twenty-five families and not for individual customers. Combo packs of a maximum of sixteen varieties of vegetables and five types of fruits for a price range of Rs. 200 to Rs. 250 is also available. Orders can also be placed through food delivery apps like Swiggy, Zomato, and Dunzo for the combo packs.

Vegetables are procured from various farm districts like Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Cuddalore district. Some of the products are procured from the Dindigul district also.
